Generative Shadow Sculptures

March 17, 2015

tool that uses techniques from computer vision and optimization to generate subtle 3D light sculptures from 2D graphics

Shadows originated as an excuse to explore generative design with computer vision and optimization. The idea was to take a 2D monotone graphic and generate a 3D sculpture that recreates the image as a shadow in response to light. In the projection process I wanted the original image to be deconstructed across the entire sculpture, so someone looking at it can't tell what shadow would be produced until the sculpture is exposed to light.

While writing the algorithms for the sculpture generation I decided a quicker and more accessible manufacturing process for the sculpture would create a tool that almost anyone could use to make their own sculptures. Right now I'm reworking the output of the image decomposition to include more intricate laser-cut and 3D printed structures. I'm hoping within the coming months it will be a complete generative engine for light sculptures.
